Every week in my Gateway to University Honors class, I was introduced to a new aspect of the Honors Program at the University of Cincinnati. Through multiple presentations, I discovered the many resources available for me to take advantage of during my time at UC. During group discussions, I was able to learn more about my fellow classmates and listen to new perspectives from people with diverse backgrounds. The out-of-class assignments taught us how proper reflection was crucial to getting the most out of any experience.
This course is mandatory for all first-year participants in the Honors Program, but not without good reason. As I discovered in class, the UHP is far too complex to summarize in a pamphlet. Given only the small introduction to the program at Orientation, I might’ve gone all four years not knowing how many resources were available to me.
In Gateway to University Honors, I also acquired a better understanding of what is expected of me as an Honors student. With these great resources, I am expected to do great things. Since my interests are mainly global, I plan to be doing many of my self-designed honors experiences abroad. Working with the Office of Nationally Competitive Awards, UC International, and support from the honors program, I hope to travel to countries such as Japan, South Korea, and China. There I hope to improve my skills in their respective languages which will aid me in my career search post-graduation.
